In 2026 musicologist and lecturer Anna Vilenskaya will embark on a European tour with her own lectures on classical and contemporary music. The meetings will take place in Paris, Hamburg, Stuttgart, Frankfurt and Luxembourg. In each city audiences can expect substantive discussions, live interaction and new perspectives on musical culture.
Anna Vilenskaya — a musicologist, popularizer of music and lecturer — is known for her ability to explain complex musical topics clearly and engagingly. Her presentations combine academic depth, topical subjects and a dynamic delivery, making conversations about music interesting both for specialists and for a general audience.
Paris — 29 March
Hit or Hype? A Discussion on the Nature of Popularity
In Paris Anna Vilenskaya will speak together with Natasha Panfilova — a marketer, a graduate program lecturer and the author of a blog with an audience of over 200,000 followers.
The topic of the meeting — «Hit or Hype?». It's an intellectual dialogue between a musicologist and a marketer about where the hits of the 21st century are formed — in the recording studio or in marketing departments.
Guests can expect analyses of well-known global tracks, discussions of popularity algorithms and mechanisms of viral spread, musical experiments and interactive voting. The audience will be able to determine what lies behind the success of contemporary songs — the performer's talent or promotional technologies.
Hamburg — 4 April
Bach: Great — But What Makes Him So?
The lecture is devoted to the phenomenon of Johann Sebastian Bach — the composer from whom the history of academic music is commonly considered to begin.
It will discuss polyphony, compositional principles and Bach's innovative solutions, as well as how his music differed from that of his contemporaries and why it influenced composers of various eras — from the classical masters to the modernists. No special musical training is required for listeners.
Stuttgart — 6 April
How Electronic Music Changed the Perception of Sound
This lecture is dedicated to how the appearance of electronic instruments affected the perception of timbre and rhythm.
Topics include the first drum machine, the development of rap, video game music, The Beatles' «White Album», Steve Reich's minimalism, the energy of The Prodigy and Radiohead's musical language. The lecture shows how technologies gradually transformed the sound of entire eras.
Frankfurt — 7 April
Pink Floyd and Psychedelic Rock: What Is the Phenomenon?
The meeting is devoted to the work of the band Pink Floyd.
Participants will discuss why the band's compositions went beyond traditional formats and what really lies behind the term «psychedelic rock». The lecture combines musical analysis, historical context and an examination of the band's artistic language.
Frankfurt — 8 April
Background Music as a Reflection of an Era
The lecture is dedicated to the phenomenon of background music of the 20th century — from Brian Eno's ambient to the music heard in elevators and on telephone lines.
Participants will learn how the human brain perceives background sound, why it helps form the cultural code of its time and how aesthetic features of different eras are reflected in it — from retrowave to the digital environment.
Luxembourg — 10 April
Musical Hearing: How It Works
A practical lecture on the nature of musical hearing. Participants will be introduced to the concepts of mode, relative pitch and musical synesthesia, conduct small experiments and receive practical tools for developing auditory perception.
Anna Vilenskaya demonstrates that everyone has a musical ear — one only needs to learn how to use it properly.
Anna Vilenskaya's European tour in 2026 is a series of intellectual events on music, culture and the perception of sound, where academic rigor is combined with contemporary research and lively dialogue with the audience.
